How to become a Locksmith

All of our locksmiths complete a 4 Year apprenticeship in locksmithing. This is studied in Melbourne at the North Melbourne Institute of Technology. NMIT's Locksmithing Unit is dedicated to providing training for the locksmithing industry throughout Australia and overseas. The Unit is located at the Heidelberg Campus. Apprentices receive an allowance paid by the Tasmanian State Government to cover airfares and accommodation whilst they stay in Melbourne.

During their first 3 years they complete their study. This consists of 12 blocks of 2 weeks. This is completed at a rate of 4 blocks per year depending on the ability of the student. Some students can complete the study component in 3 blocks per year.
